do you know of the church ever doing something like buying back a building it has previously sold? (As opposed to purchasing property it has somehow lost–I’m sure it would buy back the Kirtland Temple in a heartbeat if it could.)

    • The only one I am currently aware of is the Lehi Tabernacle which was sold and used as a public high school before being bought back and used by the church. It was eventually demolished, though, and a new church built in its place.

How much do they want for it?

    • Sorry for the delay, th. I finally called on it. The price is negotiable but listed at $700k. Contrary to what I said, the building is occasionally still used for receptions. And the most interesting thing I learned is that when they purchased the building from the church, they were required to sign a 199 year waiver that they would not serve any alcohol, including a provision that the church could repossess the building if they broke the conditions of the waiver.

the prohibition on serving alcohol for 199 years is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard of.

the first LDS chapel in Tucson became a porn theater after the church sold it. Letting people have champagne at their reception seems no big deal compared to that.

  3. We lived across the street from this building for a while; it’s a cool looking building. It’s too bad that Provo City can’t think of a use for it like they did with the library.

    • Yeah, it’s a great location FoxyJ. I didn’t realize you previously lived over there. I do recall going to a reception here way back when. It’s been so long, I don’t even remember who it was for, but I remember liking the building even then.

Just saw in the Daily Herald that it was bought and will become upscale apartments.
