Salt Lake 13th Ward Exterior
The urban flight by LDS members out of Salt Lake City continues with the generous donation of this building and land to a local charity yesterday. The building has been vacant the last four years and will be demolished to make way for the Hope Lodge, a housing facility for cancer patients. Built in 1951, largely by the ward members, the building was one of three remaining meetinghouses in the downtown area of Salt Lake City, the others being the 17th Ward located behind the Conference Center and the 8th Ward located behind the Library. This Colonial Revival building was uniquely placed on the site at a 45 degree angle to the corner that it sits on.

LDS ARCHITECTURE 
While there are no doubt energy efficiency, seismic and structural issues and other concerns with reusing a 60 year old building, it’s too bad the plan is to demolish. Hopefully the design for the new building will add something great to the neighborhood.

Yes, from what I have heard there was also water and mold damage inside. But it’s still sad when I see so many of our buildings demolished – especially since there are so few in the downtown area.

When the Hotel Utah was remodeled into the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (including a stake center inside), President Hinckley spoke of the acute need for more ward and stake meeting space in downtown Salt Lake City. So the fact that this building has been sitting vacant comes as a surprise to me.
