Discovering Great Mormon Buildings

Grays Lake Ward Exterior

The small classroom wing was built in 1963 for this remotely located meetinghouse. By 1981, the building was completely remodeled including the addition of a large chapel based on the Aspen Standard plan. The chapel is unique in the 45 degree orientation of the chapel to the classroom wing, the eave detailing, the blue standing-seam metal roof (including the use of the roofing material as siding), and in the steeple design.

I love how this building is messing with the landscape.

  2. Wow–I’ve heard many stories about Grays Lake and Wayan but I have never seen this building (my dad’s family owns/has owned ranches out that way). Really cool looking.

    • I was completely shocked to see this building here as well, especially with it being such a modern building and yet in such a remote location. So any juicy stories about the area?

Looking forward to interior shots of this one.

    • Sadly it will have to wait until the Spring or Summer for interior pics since no one was at the building when I arrived. I was too late on a Sunday afternoon and they just have one ward that meets here.

I just started getting these photos by email, and I love them. This one is really spiffy – so sleek and modern, with the bright blue in contrast to that stark background. I, too, would enjoy some interior shots.

If someone could get a great photo of the Orlando Stake Center on Par Avenue, I think people would be interested in seeing that building (built in 1964, I think). There aren’t too many that have a roof like it has, from what I’ve seen.

Thank you to those who submit these photos. I like seeing the range of meetinghouse architecture around the world. Here in Florida we don’t have too much variety.

    • Thanks so much, Alan. And thanks for the head’s up on the Orlando building. From Google Streetview it appears to have a parabolic roof line going into quite a high A-frame at the street. If anyone is able to get photos, you can email them to me at the address below.

  5. I hope you appreciate suggestions.

The Island Park Idaho chapel is interesting. the old building, still used, is a large A frame of a chapel. The interior is entirely made up of pine. I love going to church there.

    • Yes, I love suggestions. Thanks for this, Jake. I will definitely have to check it out.

Probably the ugliest, most dated LDS church ever built. Simply awful.

    • We will have to disagree then, SW. I like the use of color and the modern vocabulary. For me, I would consider the current standard plans far worse in their out-of-scale size and awkward proportioning to be lesser buildings than this one.
