Discovering Great Mormon Buildings

Chevy Chase Ward Meetinghouse Exterior

Located at the western edge of Washington DC, across the street into Maryland, this building is the current meeting place of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. From what I understand, he attends this ward more often than his ward in Nevada. If Mitt Romney becomes President of the United States in November and moves into the White House, this building is where he would most likely attend church. I am unsure of when the building was built yet, but my guess is sometime in the 50’s.

Apparently if you enter the White House address in the meetinghouse locator, it will indicate the DC 3rd ward (currently under renovation). Also, the interior of this chapel is absolutely gorgeous. I attended the singles ward in this building when I was in grad school in 97-99, and during that time there was an anniversary celebration. I think perhaps it was the 25th…

  2. I attended church here for a summer two years ago. It’s a beautiful building in a great location. Never did see Mr. Reid however…

My grandfather, Harold A. Candland, was the bishop of the Chevy Chase ward (1949-1953), during the time the meetinghouse was built. He selected the scripture that is on the front of the building. As I recall, it’s “The First and Great Commandment,Love the Lord thy God…”
There are beautiful black and white pictures of the groundbreaking. that would be neat to share.

I lived in the Chevy chase ward and went to this building when I was a young girl. I wanted know if someone remembered my parents Arvin and Darlene Cook in 1964. Or does anyone know who the bishop was during that time?
My husband and I are serving a mission here now as directors of the Visitors’ Center
