Discovering Great Mormon Buildings

Claremont Ward Window

2334 Stuart Street

Architect: Possibly Leslie Dean Price (He designed the Overlook chapel in Walnut Creek – a similar looking building)
Dedicated 1955. Renamed Oakland 5th Ward in 1965. Ward dissolved in 1970 and sold to a Christian church – possibly the Unification Church (Moonies). Sold to Hare Krishna’s several years after this.
Now the New Jagannatha Puri (ISKCON Berkeley Hare Krishna Temple)

Claremont Ward Cultural Hall

My best guess is that this space used to be the Cultural Hall. If so, we are looking at what used to be the stage. Through the arch on the right would have led to the Chapel.

This would have been the front of the chapel where the location of the rostrum was.

Claremont Ward Chapel Interior

I am not positive, but believe that this space used to be the chapel, and through the arches is where the Cultural hall / overflow used to be. Through the left arch you can see the wood paneling and doors leading to the main entry lobby of the building.

Richmond Ward Exterior

This building is quite prominent, sitting in the middle of a residential neighborhood in East Richmond. It is easily visible from the freeway (I-80) and from what I can tell is one of the few LDS buildings that has not had a renovation or addition since it was completed.

Sunset Ward Organ

It appears that the chapel organ pre-dates the building. ‘Dedicated to the Memory of Hannah Morrison Thatcher 1941.’

Interestingly, the sacrament table is completely independent of the rostrum, and is down amongst the pews.
